Hiking Time Estimator Calculator Instructions

This calculator helps you estimate how long your hike will take, considering your walking speed on flat ground, uphill climbs, steep descents, and rough terrain. Here’s how to use it:

1. Distance

Enter the total distance of your hike.

2. Average Hiking Pace on Flat Terrain

Input your usual walking speed on flat ground.

3. Elevation Gain

Enter the total amount of uphill climbing (total elevation gain) in meters or feet.

4. Steep Descent Adjustment (Optional)

If your hike has steep downhill sections (slopes steeper than 12 degrees or 20-22% incline), enter the elevation loss in feet or meters for those sections. You can leave this blank if you’re unsure or the descent isn’t steep.

5. Check Your Estimated Hike Time

Once you’ve entered the details, the calculator will give you a realistic estimate of how long your hike will take.

6. Check Your Rough Terrain Adjustment Estimated Hike Time

Rough terrain slows you down. The calculator applies a correction factor if your hike includes rocky paths, boulder fields, dense underbrush, scree, or deep mud.
